A male Gypsy Moth ~ Ian Kimber

The Gypsy Moth (Lymantria dispar) is a species of moth in the Lymantriidae family.

This species, which is now extinct as a breeding species is now a vagrant to Britain, with one or two each year, which are generally males. Although it is found in very small numbers nowadays, it has appeared to have bred in loactions such as London, where DEFRA has wiped it out, as abroad it is a major pest, and can do great damage to trees.

The creamy white female is larger than the brown male, and both have black dots and stripes, though they are more prominent on the female.
