Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is actually not native to Britain. It is grown in large densely packed plantations, for christmas trees and for timber. These plantations are well known by the Forestry Commission as damaging to local wildlife.

The tree is evergreen. It grows quite fast when grown in forestry. As such, it is popular for timber, though the Sitka Spruce is more widely used. Norway Spruce also casts dense shade, which is the main reason that large plantations of it are damaging to British wildlife.
