Common Whelk Shells

Common Whelk

This species is common throughout Britain. Sometimes called the Buckie, this species is easily identified by it's large size, as it can grow to around 10cm in length.

This species is found on sand and mud down to about 100m deep. The shells of these species are often used by Hermit Crabs once the Whelk has died.

The large sponge-like eggcases are often washed ashore, and are rumoured to have once been used by sailors as sponges.
