Trichoptera

This large order of moth-like insects has nearly 6,000 species worldwide, with 400 in Europe and 189 species in Britain. A large majority of species spend their larval life underwater. They are rather similar to the Lepidoptera, but differ in having hairy wings. Trichoptera means "hairy-wing" in latin. There is only one British species which doesn't spend it's larval stage as a larva underwater.
